ABOUT US

Marais Family

The Marais Family has a rich and storied history dating back to 1825 when they established the farm. Originally from the marshy region just outside Paris, the family named their farm after their roots, and Marais has now become a suburb of the city. The family’s legacy began as livestock farmers, eventually diversifying into cash crops and planting fruit trees, particularly apples. The Apple House, still standing on the farm, bears witness to their cider-making tradition.

In 2005, Kosie Marais, a member of the bloodline, acquired the farm from his aunt on his mother’s side, ensuring that the estate has remained within the family for generations.

In the late 19th century, the Marais Family ventured into viticulture, initially planting vines. However, it was only after the Great War that vineyards became the primary source of income due to a wine shortage in Europe. The family’s commitment to winemaking persisted, and by the end of World War II, they witnessed the rise of cooperatives. Kosie Marais’s grandfather played a pivotal role by donating grounds for the current cooperative, all while retaining his own cellar, Breëland, showcasing his prowess as both a winemaker and a shrewd businessman.
